Thanksgiving After the Fact

Sat, 29 Nov 2008 07:03:12 -0800
The economy being what it is, I decided not to go out and spend a boodle of money on wine for Thanksgiving dinner. I would just take a few bottles from the stock on hand, which would mean, of course, that people — 10 altogether — would be drinking different wines; when you receive samples, you have a lot of single bottles of wine. Then a friend coming to dinner asked what he could bring, and I suggested that he go to a retail store and buy a bottle of zinfandel without too much alcohol (under 1

Wines with Chocolate

Tips for Successfully Pairings Rule #1, the wine should be at least as sweet, if not a touch sweeter, than the chocolate you are serving it with. Otherwise, the taste may quickly veer towards sour. When pairing wines with chocolate, your best bet is to match lighter, more elegant flavored chocolates with lighter-bodied wines; likewise, the stronger the chocolate, the more full-bodied the wine should be. For example, a bittersweet chocolate tends to pair well with an intense, in-your-face Califor

If you can’t make up your mind about which wines to buy last minute for Thanksgiving, try this threesome. I did, and they all made me want to share with others. I’m impressed when a winemaker’s knowledge extends beyond a single variety into a landscape of many. They coax production of blends whose mystery languishes in a multi-faceted balance, wrapping hints of each varietal around my palate. The following wines are crowded to their corks with varietal orgies, but each arrives perfectly balanc

Scion in Rutherglen is one of my favourite and one of the best boutique wineries in Victoria. Vigneron Jan Milhinch is one of the most illuminating people in the wine industry that I have met. She is extremely welcoming at the cellar door, and has a manner unlike most other winery owners or staff. Some Cellar door staff seem only interested in sales and not in communicating to their customers. Jan sells the story of Scion as much as she sells wine, and it is the uniqueness of this approach th
